Jeter hitless in return with Yankees (AP)

On a tradition-filled day, Derek Jeter was back at shortstop and batting leadoff for the New York Yankees. It doesn't get much more fireworks and hot dogs than that. Sidelined since June 13 with a calf injury, Jeter was activated from the 15-day disabled list Monday to continue his quest to reach 3,000 career hits.

Alex Rodriguez was placed on the disabled list with a strained left calf on Saturday, taking one of the most potent bats out of the New York Yankees' lineup just as the AL East pennant race really starts to heat up. Rodriguez returned to the lineup for Friday night's series opener against the Seattle Mariners after missing three games with the calf injury.
