Seattle selects Eric Wedge as new manager (AP)

Eric Wedge is returning to baseball after a year away to face the challenge of another rebuilding project. This time, it's with the Seattle Mariners. Wedge was officially announced on Monday as the Mariners' seventh manager since 2003. His charge is rebuilding a franchise a decade removed from its last playoff appearance and coming off a second 101-loss campaign in the past three seasons.

Vintage Pettitte leads Yanks to 2-0 lead on Twins (AP)

Andy Pettitte missed two months with a groin injury this summer and was still trying to find his strength and his form in late September. Lance Berkman hit only one homer for the New York Yankees after coming over in a deadline-day trade during the worst season of his powerful career. This is October, though, when the Yankees usually bring out their best.

Derek Jeter tries to get swing right for October (AP)

For a decade and a half, he has been a constant for the New York Yankees, sparking the offense and getting big hits at key moments. This, however, has been a most un-Jeter-like season for Derek Jeter, the captain with five World Series rings. Steinbrenner remembered for his bluster, charity (AP)

George Steinbrenner was suspended from baseball for trying to disgrace his high-paid outfielder, Dave Winfield. A low point for "The Boss," for sure. But rather than let the episode fade away, the Yankees owner reached out nearly a decade later to repair the rift. For those who knew Steinbrenner, behind a feisty facade was a fiercely loyal friend.
