In 1973, the American League started using the designated hitter as a means of adding more offense to the game and, therefore, drawing more fan interest. Ron Bloomberg of the New York Yankees was the first DH as he batted for the pitchers on April 6, 1973.

Sabathia failed to hold a fifth-inning lead and Jose Molina's single in the ninth lifted the Toronto Blue Jays over the Yankees 5-4 Friday night that kept Mariano Rivera on hold at 600 saves.
