Jones, Braves sweep Mets in doubleheader (AP)

Julio Teheran earned his first big league win as the Atlanta Braves used a lineup with Chipper Jones as the No. 2 hitter for the first time in 15 years to beat the New York Mets 5-1 Thursday and complete a sweep of a doubleheader made necessary by the threat of Hurricane Irene. Jones had a sacrifice fly and RBI double in the nightcap and a solo homer and a double in the opener, a 6-5 victory for...

Teixeira homers, has 4 RBIs in Yankees’ win (AP)

The matchup between first-place teams fizzled with the Yankees' first batted ball. Nyjer Morgan got twisted up in center field and fell trying to catch Curtis Granderson's routine fly that ended up a run-scoring triple, and New York gave Zack Greinke and the sloppy Milwaukee Brewers a rude welcome back to the Bronx in a 12-2 drubbing Tuesday night.

Royals come back to beat Yankees, 4-3 in 11 (AP)

Eric Hosmer's family rose from their seats at Yankee Stadium, watching his first career home run go soaring into the second deck in right field. They were probably more excited about his sacrifice fly about three hours later. Hosmer drove in Chris Getz with a shallow flyball in the 11th inning, capping a late comeback and lifting the Royals to a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees.

Cabrera, Tigers win long-ball derby over Yankees (AP)

In a long-ball derby, Tigers manager Jim Leyland preferred Brennan Boesch's simple sacrifice fly as the hit of the game. Boesch's run-scoring flyball was just one of four RBIs for the designated hitter on a four-hit day, and Miguel Cabrera hit two home runs as Detroit outslugged the New York Yankees 10-7 Sunday for its first win of the season.

Yanks fan: Why are the Yankees scouting Carlos Silva? (Associated Content)

The part I don't understand about baseball is not the reverse force double play, the infield fly rule, or even free agency (although I am still fuzzy on Rule 5). No, the part I don't understand is why the general manager of the New York Yankees, Brian Cashman, is supposedly paying scouts money to assess a mediocre pitcher with anger management issues. I am particularly confused about this as a great many of my Yankee articles have involved the current pitching staff and the new guys trying to show off their skills for a spot in the rotation.
