George Steinbrenner often compared himself to powerful, iron-fisted leaders. Assuredly, the late New York Yankees owner never had the Iranian president in mind. An American diplomat did, calling Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the "The George Steinbrenner of Iran" in a leaked U.S. cable detailing the president's meddling with his country's national soccer team.

George Steinbrenner's family is rooting hard for the late New York Yankees owner to get elected to the Hall of Fame. Steinbrenner, former manager Billy Martin and one-time players' union head Marvin Miller also are on the 12-man Veterans Committee ballot. Results will be announced Dec. 6 during the winter meetings.

Steinbrenner & Shannon honored posthumously (AP)

George Steinbrenner and baseball historian and official scorer Bill Shannon have been voted posthumous awards by the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Steinbrenner, who owned the New York Yankees from 1973 until his death at age 80 on July 13, was voted the Joan Payson Award for community service at the chapter's annual meeting Tuesday.

Mary Jane Shriner is frustrated. She has nearly two dozen letters from college-age George Steinbrenner detailing his still-forming personality, filled with charm and sweetness and hope, and the New York Yankees are blocking her from publishing them in a book. "He just was very, very nice. I can't think of a mean thing to say about him," she told The Associated Press by phone.
