In the eyes of most, the San Francisco Giants were fortunate to make it to the post-season, let alone advance to the World Series. The Giants barely snuck into the playoffs with a win over the San Diego Padres on the last day of the season to determine the final playoff spot in the National League. Once they arrived though, they played like a team who had been there before. They eliminated the Braves in four games, knocked out the two-time defending NL champion Phillies in five games to advance to the World Series for the first time since 2002.

Yankees switch again, go back to Hughes vs Boston (AP)

Insisting this wasn't a panic move in the midst of a late-season slump, New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi changed course again and scheduled Phil Hughes to start against Boston in the finale of their weekend series. Hughes was set to replace Dustin Moseley on Sunday night as the Yankees tried to avoid a three-game sweep and gain ground on the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

Yankees beat Rays, take 2 1/2 -game lead in AL East (AP)

Real fast, Nick Swisher and the New York Yankees got real comfortable against James Shields. Swisher homered to key a five-run burst in the first inning against Big Game James and the Yankees beat Tampa Bay 8-3 on Tuesday night, opening a 2 1/2 -game lead over the Rays in the AL East. The Yankees cut their magic number for clinching a playoff spot to three over Boston.

Phils, Rays lead wild cards with 40 games to go (AP)
