After New York Yankees backup catcher Francisco Cervelli broke his foot in a spring training game, it was a foregone conclusion that top prospect Jesus Montero would replace him on the roster and get his first taste of the majors. But as opening day approaches, the Yankees have sent their top two catching prospects (Montero and Austin Romine) back to the minor leagues and awarded unknown Gustavo Molina the backup catcher position. And I as a Yankee fan ask: what happened?

Fan perspective: New kids on the block catch on for Yankees (Associated Content)
After all the talk of Jesus Montero versus Austin Romine, it's Gustavo Molina who appears ready to win the job of New York Yankees backup catcher position. Molina was a long-shot to make the team, with Russell Martin the starter, and Francisco Cervilli the backup. Of course when Cervelli went down, an opening was created. The hope was that one of the young catching prospects would win the job, but Montero has struggled behind the plate this season, and both have had problems at the plate.
