Hughes sidesteps arbitration by agreeing to deal with Yanks (Yahoo! Sports)

New York Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes, who was eligible for salary arbitration, avoided a potential hearing by signing a one-year contract worth $3.2 million Monday. Hughes, 25, was limited to 17 games and 14 starts last season because of arm fatigue and went 5-5 with a 5.79.

Right-hander Phil Hughes and the New York Yankees agreed Monday to a $3.2 million, one-year contract, a raise of $500,000 that followed an injury filled season. Hughes can make an additional $225,000 in performance bonuses under the deal: $50,000 for 20 starts, and $25,000 each for 23, 26, 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33 starts.
