Selig expects expanded playoffs to start this year (AP)

Commissioner Bud Selig expects baseball to expand its playoffs this season. Players and owners have already agreed to add an additional wild-card team in each league, but are still deciding whether it would take effect this year or in 2013. Selig said there are scheduling issues to be worked out -- once they are, the new 10-team format would begin with a one-game playoff.

Pretty neat way to warm up for the playoffs, huh? A benchwarmer hitting .108 saves Tampa Bay. A $142 million star lets it slip away for Boston. A rookie closer falters in Atlanta. An ace delivers for St. Louis. Wild-card Wednesday lived up to its billing, and then some. Fans needed three TVs, and maybe a few cups of joe to see how it all turned out for Joe Maddon, Joe Girardi and Chipper Jones.

The Tampa Bay Rays clinched the AL wild card with a stunning rally Wednesday night, overcoming a late seven-run deficit and then beating the New York Yankees 8-7 on Evan Longoria's home run in the 12th inning. The Rays' win came four minutes after Boston blew a one-run lead in the ninth at Baltimore and lost 4-3.

Yankees look ahead to playoffs (AP)

The New York Yankees are focused on the playoffs and not a big blown lead in their regular-season finale. Scott Proctor surrendered a game-ending home run to Tampa Bay star Evan Longoria in the 12th inning, sending the Yankees to a wild 8-7 loss that gave the Rays the AL wild card on Wednesday night.
